Thomas Hentges, DVM
Veterinarian / Owner

Dr. Hentges is a native South Carolinian born in Aiken. He received his Veterinary degree from the University of Tennessee in 1985 and began practicing in Charleston in 1986. Animal Medical West opened in 1989 and has been his constant companion ever since. Dr. Hentges likes to spend his free time fishing and boating. Animals are his favorite people and working with them is his passion. Dr.Hentges only works two days a week and spends his down time at the Berkeley County SPCA helping animals in need.

Mindy Campbell, DVM
Associate Veterinarian

Mindy is a Charleston native. She attended College of Charleston where she majored in Biochemistry, then continued her education at the University of Georgia where she received her Veterinary degree. Mindy enjoys running, the beach and wakeboarding. She has a beautiful daughter and a handsome son. Her furry children include her Golden Mix Maisey, Yellow Labs Jetty and Jasper, and her cat named Kuz.

Tara Ross, DVM
Associate Veterinarian

Dr. Tara Ross has been practicing veterinary medicine since 1992. A Charleston native, she is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine. She formerly owned and operated an emergency animal hospital in Mississippi and joined the staff of Animal medical West in 2001. Her current pets include a dog, cat, and three horses.

Practice Manager

Dana originally grew up in Charleston and moved to Nevada, England, Hawaii, New Mexico and then Colorado. She began her animal-related career early gaining extensive experience with a wide range of animals including horses and chimpanzees while working at New Mexico State University and Colorado State Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Dana returned to Charleston to be closer to her family and began her experience at Animal Medical West in 1996 as a technician. She is now the hospital manager where she currently strives to make Animal Medical West a place where all animals feel welcome, comfortable, and above all receive the best care possible. Dana has three dogs, a Bluetick Coonhound mix named Cindy, a Redbone Coonhound named Fern, and a Redbone Coonhound mix named Emmy Lou. Dana and her husband have one son and in addition to being on the board of the Carolina Coonhound Rescue, often welcome Coonhound fosters into their home until they find their forever family.

Head Veterinary Technician

Joann has been working at Animal Medical West since November 2003. She has wanted to work with animals since childhood. Joann graduated from Trident Tech Veterinary Technician Program in 2002. She married in October 2007 and welcomed a boy in 2011 and a baby girl in 2016. She also has two poodles named Pebbles and Belle and a Redbone coonhound named Rey. Joann is a licensed vet tech with a degree from Trident Technical College and oversees externships with current vet tech students, offering a valuable on-job experience for future veterinary technicians.

Veterinary Technician

Originally from Aynor, South Carolina, Cristen (“C.J.”) has been with Animal Medical West since 2016. She grew up in a small town named Aynor, which is 45 minutes away from Myrtle Beaches.
She has always had a love for animals and even helped her grandfather with his small farm when she was younger. She had a number of dogs throughout her childhood.

In 2016, she moved to Charleston to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. Her goal is to be an advocate for any and all animals that come to Animal Medical West. She has a passion for helping others and making a difference in our patient and client’s lives.

At home, she shares her home with Bubba, a rottweiler mix, Owen, a German Shorthair Pointer mix, and Max and Adina, who are both DSH.

Veterinary Technician

Darryl has been working at Animal Medical West since before anyone can remember. Darryl is a skilled technician and specializes in surgery prep. He likes detailing cars, yardwork, and helping out as the clinic handyman with decades of experience in appliance repair, landscaping, and plumbing.

Veterinary Technician/Training Supervisor

Elora started working at Animal Medical West in November of 2014 as CSR. She received a letter of recognition in Criminal Justice from the College of Southern Maryland. Raised in the Navy, she was born in Italy and traveled a good deal, before being raised in Lusby, MD. Elora married in August of 2014 and they have six cats named Ganymede, Greyleigh, Callisto, Zephyr, Hyde, and Andromeda. She also has four dogs named Freya, Odin, Marcel, and Enzo. Her favorite holiday is Halloween.

She is Fear Free Certified, Low Stress Handling Certified, Human-Animal Bond Certified, and even founded the rescue Crow Moon Rescue in Charleston!

When not at work, she loves hiking, learning, travel, and working with her rescue group. Her goal is to learn as much as she can to be the best tech she can be. Eventually, she would like to be a practice manager and earn her CVPM.

Veterinary Technician

Xochitl was raised in Hampton County, SC and graduated from Clemson University in May 2017 with a degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology and minors in Animal and Veterinary Sciences and Spanish. She has always enjoyed working with and caring for animals.
Outside of work, she enjoys hiking, the beach, and spending time with family.

At home, she has three pets – Molly, Bella, and Bronson.


Tricia graduated from Trident Technical College with an Associates in Science. Tricia has lived in Charleston most of her life and has worked in the veterinary field since 2014. She has been with AMW since 2015.

When not at work, she enjoys working in the yard, fishing, bowling, and sleeping. Since working at AMW, she has fallen in love with the coonhound breed and now fosters and volunteers for the Carolina Coonhound Rescue.

She shares her home with Cali (jack russell terrier) and Brady (min pin).


Toni attended NCA&T and obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in biology. She then migrated to Charleston to pursue a career in the veterinary field. She then enrolled in the Vet Tech Program at Trident Tech while working at a traveling vaccine clinic when she realized she wanted to pursue a career in exotic medicine. She is currently applying to veterinary schools to pursue a career in Zoology with a specialty in exotic medicine.

When not at work, she loves to paint, write, travel, and of course, go to the zoo! At AMW, she can always be counted on to bring a warm smile and passion for animals to the team!

She shares her home with Bella Michelle, her Havanese!

Pet Groomer

Amie has been grooming pets since 2002 and specializes in cat grooming and hand-stripping. She has dedicated her career to finding the most effective way to groom our feline friends. She lives in Summerville with her husband and three children.

Amie’s goal is to bring continuing education to area groomers and to educate pet owners on proper pet care and maintenance.

At home, Amie shares her home with three cats – Pickle, Tigger, and Roo!

Kennel Attendant

Josh, known as “Juice” by most of the staff, graduated with a degree in Computer Science from the College of Charleston. His passion then turned from computers to animal care, having worked the last few years in both boarding facilities and in veterinary technician assisting. He loves overseeing dogs at play and hugging Great Danes.

He shares his home with his pet, Kat. They love to hang out and go for long walks on the beach together.

Bather/Kennel Technician

Savannah grew up around animals and loves to care for them. She has now worked as a kennel tech since 2016 and is looking to continue growing in the field.

When not at work, she loves to kayak, swim, and relax at the beach with a book. Her goal is to support her many (and many more) furbabies.

At home, she has a two-year-old Labrador retriever who loves the beach and fetching tennis balls.

Kennel Attendant

Joshua is currently a student at Trident Tech in addition to his work at AMW! He is from Charleston and never wants to leave. He plans to eventually become a vet and wants to primarily work with dogs and cats. Eventually, Joshua would like to own his own veterinary practice!

At home, he has two dogs (Dakota and Monkey) and four cats (Leopard, Minion, Pretty Kitty, and Blue).


Emma previously worked at a veterinary clinic in northern VA but decided to move down to SC to be closer to her family.

When not at work, she enjoys reading, cuddling with her pets, swimming, going to the beach, and watching movies.

She shares her home with two cats, Leon and Tito!
